How Long Do Water Softeners Last? (Lifespan by Part + When to Replace)
Quick answer: a water softener should last about 20 years with proper maintenance, according to This Old House, which cites the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors. Parts wear out at different rates. The resin typically lasts 10 to 15 years on water with under 1 ppm of chlorine, and less with more chlorine. The control valve’s seals and piston are the most common repair. If a repair costs more than half the price of a new softener, or the softener is near the end of its life, replacing it usually makes more sense. The calculator below runs the numbers.
How long each part lasts
| Part | How long it lasts | What shortens it | The fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole softener | About 20 years with proper maintenance (This Old House) | Hard water and skipped maintenance | Replace the softener |
| Resin | 10–15 years at under 1 ppm of chlorine (Water Conditioning & Purification) | Chlorine (each 1 ppm halves its life, says Purolite), iron, hot water | Replace the resin |
| Valve seals, spacers and piston | Wear parts; SoftPro warranties them for 5 years | Wear, sediment | A valve rebuild kit |
| Nozzle and venturi | Lasts if kept clean | Sand, silt and dirt plug it | Clean it (see your manual) |
| Resin and brine tanks | Long-lived; often warrantied for 10 years to life | Cracks, rust or leaks | Replace the tank |

What warranties say about each part
Warranties aren’t lifespans, but they show which parts makers expect to last. Here’s how four softeners we’ve covered are warrantied:
| Tanks | Valve and electronics | Other parts | |
|---|---|---|---|
| SoftPro Elite | Lifetime (resin and brine tanks) | Lifetime valve body; 7 years electronics | 5 years piston, seals and spacers; 10 years prorated on resin |
| Culligan Aquasential Smart HE | Lifetime tank and resin | 10 years circuit board and valve body | 5 years meter and sensors; 1 year whole unit |
| AFWFilters Fleck 5600SXT | 10 years mineral tank | 5 years control valve | — |
| Whirlpool WHES48 | 10 years tank | 3 years electronics | 2 years parts and labor (Whirlpool says up to 10 with its cleanser) |

Signs your water softener is failing
- Hard water is back. White, chalky scale on faucets and showerheads means the softener isn’t keeping up.
- The salt level never drops. If it isn’t using salt, it probably isn’t regenerating. Check for a salt bridge first (below).
- Lower water pressure. This Old House lists slower-running showers and faucets as a sign the softener could be the culprit.
- Rust, cracks or leaks on the unit. This Old House says these mean it’s time to consider a replacement.
- Frequent repairs. If you keep calling a technician, replacing it may cost less in the long run.
- Resin beads or salty water at the tap. See resin beads in your water and why softened water tastes salty.
Before you call it a failure, rule out the simple things. A hard crust of salt, called a salt bridge, can form in the brine tank, and Whirlpool’s manual explains that without brine the resin isn’t recharged, so the water turns hard. A plugged nozzle and venturi has the same effect, and so does a hardness setting that’s too low; see our guide to water softener hardness settings.
Repair or replace? Calculator
Compare what a repair costs for the years your softener has left with what a new one costs per year.
Enter the age, repair quote and new price to compare.
How it works: the repair cost is spread over the years your softener has left, and a new softener’s price over its full expected life. The cheaper cost per year wins. The calculator also checks the long-standing rule of thumb Consumer Reports used: replace when a repair costs more than 50% of a replacement. Consumer Reports now uses a more detailed tool, so treat this as a guide, not a verdict.
Common repairs (and what they fix)
- Valve rebuild. On a Fleck valve, a rebuild kit replaces the piston, seals and spacers. One listing for the kit says worn parts can make the valve leak, fail to draw brine or stop working.
- Resin replacement. When the softener regenerates but the water stays hard, worn-out resin is a likely cause. See our resin replacement guide.
- Cleaning the nozzle and venturi. Whirlpool says this small part creates the suction that pulls brine into the resin tank. If sand, silt or dirt plugs it, the softener won’t work.
- Breaking a salt bridge. Whirlpool suggests gently pushing a broom handle into the salt to break the crust. Don’t use anything sharp or pound on the tank, which can damage it.
If you hire it out, This Old House puts annual professional servicing at $150–$300, including cleaning, testing and minor repairs.
Fleck 5600 softener valve rebuild kit
A kit with the main piston (60102-00), seals and spacers (60125) and brine valve (60032) for the Fleck 5600 valve used on many DIY softeners, including the AFWFilters models we recommend. If you only need seals, there’s a 60125 seal and spacer kit on its own.
Good to know: check the valve model on your control head before ordering. The softener piston (60102-00) is different from the filter piston (60102-10).

- Keep up with cleaning. Whirlpool recommends its softener cleanser every four months. If you have iron, use an iron-removing cleaner.
- Use the right salt and check it. Whirlpool recommends nugget, pellet or coarse solar salt with under 1% impurities, not rock or table salt, and checking the salt every two to three weeks until you know your routine.
- Protect the resin from chlorine. On city water with a lot of chlorine, a carbon filter before the softener helps; see our filter and softener combos.
- Set the hardness correctly so it doesn’t regenerate more than it needs to.
- Get it serviced. This Old House puts annual professional servicing at $150–$300.
How long does a water softener regeneration take?
Usually about 1.5 to 2 hours. Whirlpool says a manual recharge on its softener takes about two hours. On a Fleck 5600SXT, one seller’s default settings add up to about an hour and a half: 10 minutes of backwash, 60 minutes of brine draw and slow rinse, 12 minutes of fast rinse and several minutes to refill the brine tank. See how water softener regeneration works.
How to replace a water softener
- Test your water and size the new one. Use our size calculator; your old softener’s size may not be right.
- Put the old softener in bypass, shut off the water to the house and unplug the softener.
- Drain and disconnect it: the inlet, outlet, drain line and brine line. Empty the brine tank.
- Install the new softener following its manual, including the drain line and any local plumbing code requirements.
- Start it up and program it: purge air slowly, set the hardness and time, add salt and run a first regeneration.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a water softener last?
About 20 years with proper maintenance, according to This Old House and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors. Very hard water and skipped maintenance can shorten that.
How long does water softener resin last?
Often 10 to 15 years on water with under 1 ppm of chlorine. Purolite says each 1 ppm of chlorine cuts resin life by 50%.
Is it worth repairing an old water softener?
Often, if the repair is cheap compared with a new one and the softener has years left. An inexpensive seal kit on a 10-year-old softener is usually worth it; a big repair on a 20-year-old one usually isn’t. The calculator above compares the two.
What fails most often on a water softener?
The control valve’s wear parts (seals, spacers and piston) and the resin. Many “failures” turn out to be a salt bridge or a plugged nozzle and venturi, which are easy fixes.
